Success Does Not Come Over Night

This past weekend I spent some time in a Borders bookstore. Yes, I have an affinity towards books. I can tell you I have a personal relationship with Borders and Amazon.com. As far as I am concerned there is not enough time to read all the books I want to read, especially as new ones come out each week.

I spent at least two hours wandering the store, reading the inside jackets of many books. I looked at books about economics, exercise, nutrition, self-help, psychology, medical and spy novels. I usually have 3-4 books lined up to read. Many people ask where I find the time to read. To be honest I read quite a bit at night before bed time and in the morning when eating breakfast.
On this last jaunt at Borders I took the time to observe what people are reading and the new books that are available. Many authors are jumping on the economic band wagon. Sensationalism is running amok from the next depression, poisoned water and food and losing weight over night or making a million dollars in 7 days. My favorite books (sarcasm noted here) are about the end of the world in 2012. And it has to be true because Hollywood has made a movie about the end of the world. At least the folks who stored water and dried goods for the end of the world in 2000 (Y2K) will look absolutely brilliant and very prepared.
The books that tout weight loss over night; and the books that will share the keys on how to be rich in a short time with little work really insults my intelligence and I ‘m sure insults the intelligence of the subscribers to his broadcast.
I know books have to sell and the book stores, publishers and authors are financially hurting just like every other business in this economy. And I know books that have titles like “You can Lose Weight in 30 Days by Decreasing your Calories and Increasing Your Exercise” won’t sell. And neither will “Become Debt-Free in 7-10 Years by Spending Less than You Can Afford.” These titles are boring although it may be the truth.
I share this with you because now is the time to pull up our boot straps, tighten our wallets, create a budget;  and learn how to eat right and exercise to live a healthy and prosperous life.
And you know what? It will take work. And sometimes it may not be fun.
Whether you are trying to lose weight, pay down your debt, build a business or write a book, it does not happen overnight. Please limit spending your money on “Get Rich Quick” schemes and “Dream Your Weight a Way.”
When you are spending money keep in mind your return on investment (ROI). This return may come in the form of learning how to eat the foods that are right for you and your current health status; or a seminar that will teach you the benefits of proper financial planning.  For example I am often asked the benefits (ROI) when I am hired a s a wellness and life coach. The benefits are that I work with only a few selected clientele a month (3-4), no “cookbook” approach as everyone’s needs are different, the ability to address pressing issues as health, wealth and happiness as often they are interlinked. These benefits usually result in an increase of financial education (proper budgeting and fiscal responsibility) and a lifestyle change that is appropriate for your needs and goals. And most people are surprised at the affordability of one on one coaching.
That’s it for now. Have a great week!
