Change the Channel
I was in ninth grade when I read my first motivational book. It was Wayne Dyer’s Your Erroneous Zones. This book, as well as his other books which I subsequently read, taught me many wonderful and useful lessons.
“If you don’t like your current situation in life, change it” was one of these lessons.
If you are watching television or listening to the radio and you don’t like a particular show or song, you change the channel.
It’s the same in life. If you are not happy or if you feel “stuck,” just change the channel.
When I discuss the idea of “changing the channel” with my coaching clients, I generally get one of three responses.
The first is “You don’t understand. I can’t just change my life.”
This response might be a rationalization for not wanting to change your life. You have to decide whether or not you can change the situations that are making you unhappy.
Even if you truly cannot change your life, you do have the power to change your perception of your current situation. For example, if you must work two jobs just to support your family, you can look at this in a positive manner. You can be grateful that you have both jobs, even though it is surely very difficult to work two jobs and raise a family. It is a matter of looking at your glass as half full rather than half empty.
The second response is “Well, if you walked in my shoes, you would understand.” I always enjoy this one. You would be surprised how many others share a story that is similar to yours. Everyone has had hardships at one time or another. People from all over the world subscribe to this broadcast. My interactions with them have made me realize that we all, no matter our country of origin or station in life, want the same things—health, wealth, and happiness.
The third reason that I am given for not being able to change is “I have no choice.” Sometimes this is very true. For example, if you have been diagnosed with a disease, your life will be changed by something you can’t really control. You do have a choice however; you can either give up or plow ahead and make the best of your situation. One of my clients suffers with Multiple Sclerosis. She has not given up on life. In fact, I would have to say that she has done quite the opposite. She is an inspiration for life. She advocates and helps people with Multiple Sclerosis lead a better, productive life.
How does one go about changing the channel?
Before remote controls became the norm, what did you have to do to change the channel?
That’s right! You had to get off your butt!
You won’t be able to change your channel if you don’t get up off the couch. In other words, your action step will be to get busy and create a blueprint to design your life the way you want it to be.
Whether you want to change or improve your current health condition, financial status, or mental outlook, your second action step (the first was to get moving) will require you to think of five ways you can change your situation. Once you’ve determined five ways to change, pick one and work on that specific one for a week. Once you accomplish that specific action step, move on to the next and so on and so forth until all action steps are completed.
Can it be that simple?
Nope! Not really. If it were, everyone would simply follow the steps to his or her goal.
Will you stumble along the way?
Yep! But you’ll be fine just as long as you get back up and keep moving forward.
I highly recommend Your Erroneous Zones by Wayne Dyer. Try to find the time to read it if you haven’t already.
