Let the Past Go

The past does not dictate the future, plain and simple.

I shared these words with my friend just the other day.  He
insists on blaming his current situation on his past. It is
true that he didn't grow up in the best family environment.  He
just won’t let go of the past and continues to use it as the
excuse for the present state of his life.

Of course, there are many people who grew up in an awful
environment who cope well and manage to find the will to move
beyond their boundaries, whether physical, financial or mental.

I certainly understand that some people have experienced family
situations that have left physical and mental scars.  These
should be addressed with a licensed professional.

Unfortunately, there are also many with pasts that weren’t
really all that awful who play the blame game simply because
they don't want to take responsibility for their current plight
in life.

Do you feel that you are being held back by your past?

If so, it's time to let it go. Whether one of your parents said
something to you, schoolmates teased or bullied you, or a
family member shunned you, it's time to move on.

Take stock in what you have now to help you move beyond the
past.

Let me try explaining this to you in another way. If I am
considering buying a stock, I definitely look at its history. I
want to know how the stock has performed in both good and bad
times. This is important and offers me a little insight. But I
don’t stop there. Next I research how the stock is currently
performing. Past performance does not dictate future
performance. I evaluate the company's portfolio. And more
importantly, I want to know who is managing the business, how
the money is being handled, and what's new on the horizon.

Who is managing your business (dreams, goals, health, and life)
and what is new for you on the horizon?

What's in the past is in the past. You can't change it, so why
bother thinking about it? Would it be nice to travel back in a
time machine and change some things around? You better believe
it! But that can't happen (not yet, anyway). The only thing you
can change is your future.

Take a step back. Look at how far you have come. You can’t swim
to the top until you get rid of the weight. Let the weight of
the past go.
