Adversity is a Part of Life
I hope you had a great weekend. And I hope you did something
FUN! Those of us who live on the East Coast are happy to see
warm weather.
The first suggestion of hot weather makes many of us look back
to the summer days of our youth. Maybe you spent your time
working over summer break. Maybe you just hung out with your
friends—around your home, at the beach, at the pool, or
wherever you liked to be.
I remember during those lazy, hazy summer days that
conversations would often turn to thoughts about being an
adult. “When I get older, I am going to travel the world.”
“When I become an adult, everything will be much easier.” “When
I grow up, nobody will be able to tell me what to do; I will do
what I want when I want to do it.” “I am going to have a
wonderful, perfect family and home.” “I will make lots of
money.” Most of us have had such conversations.
Many adults unfortunately feel that they have not met the
expectations of what they had hoped to accomplish in life. They
experience physical, emotional, and/or financial pain. They
feel that life is filled with adversity.
They offer excuses for what they consider to be their lack of
success. The spouse, the kids, the job, the economy, the boss,
the friends, and anything or anyone that they feel they can
blame for their problems are all included in the list of
excuses.
Some people perceive adversity as a way of learning about
themselves. Others perceive adversity as the reason they are
not succeeding in life.
I believe adversity builds character. When times are tough, are
you the kind of person who can pull up yourself up by your
bootstraps, get tough on yourself, and accomplish your
definition of success?
I believe you are.
I believe you can overcome any adversity you may be
experiencing.
Will you need help? Maybe…and that’s okay. That’s why I am
here—to help.
This week’s action step is to write (yes, I mean write, not
type on the computer) five action steps that you can take to
better your situation. If you need help or want any ideas,
please e-mail me.
In the words of Dr. James G. Bilkey, “You never will be the
person you can be if pressure, tension and discipline are taken
out of your life.”
