Stop Being Afraid

What are you afraid of?

When you were a kid, were you afraid of the dark or the
bogeyman or the monster under the bed?

Maybe you still are afraid of those things! But usually our
fears change as we grow older. We might be afraid of losing
our job or health insurance. We might be afraid of getting
sick. We might be afraid of change in the relationships that
we value.

How can we get rid of these fears?

When I think about fear, I think of a patient who came to my
office for an evaluation of back and leg pain. When she
completed her medical history, she wrote that she had cancer.
She stated that she had a brain tumor (present tense).

I asked her about the prognosis. The tumor was inoperable. She
said that seven years ago she had been told she had two years
to live.

The interesting part of the story is what she said to me. I
will never forget this.

She said, “I am no longer afraid. I no longer feel trapped. I
am free.”

Since she was diagnosed with the brain tumor, she has been
living her dream. She says that she does more things now than
she ever had before because she has nothing to lose.

In the words of journalist Dorothy Thompson, “Only when we are
no longer afraid do we begin to live.”

What motivates us to begin living our dream or at least to
begin working on our dream? What motivates us to improve our
lifestyle?

Changes often occur when someone is diagnosed with a terminal
or life-threatening condition. Fear of what will happen
prompts changes. Don’t wait for a diagnosis to change your
life.

Now is the time to start living. Not yesterday, but
today—right now! Don’t be afraid.

If you had only two years to live, what would you like to do,
see, or be?

To Your Life!
